Shelby County Jail Overview
Shelby County Jail is the county jail and local detention facility for Shelby County. The operator is the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. The research also found the vendor-facing name Shelby MO Detention Center on Tiger Commissary, which appears to refer to the same local detention center for commissary service purposes. No separate city jail, regional jail, state prison, federal prison, or ICE detention facility was identified inside Shelby County for this build.
The facility holds adult pretrial detainees, local sentenced misdemeanants, persons held on warrants or holds, and persons pending transfer after sentencing. Municipal defendants may be committed to the county jail if a municipality lacks a safe or suitable confinement place and space is available under RSMo 479.180. The county website does not publish a current jail administrator, public roster, lobby schedule, or separate jail division page.

Lookup Shelby County Jail Inmates
No official Shelby County Jail online roster was found, so inmate lookup begins with the Sheriff's Office. Ask whether the person is currently in custody, whether bond has been set, whether a release or transfer occurred, and whether a formal written request is needed for a copy of the booking record. If charges have been filed, search Case.net after the custody check.

Shelby County Jail Building History
The most distinctive local fact is the courthouse-basement jail. WGEM reporting cited in the research says the jail dates back to 1893 and has been located in the basement of the Shelby County Courthouse. Officials described space, plumbing, and security problems. Sheriff Arron Fredrickson was reported as saying there was a growing need for a facility rather than continued upkeep and maintenance of the existing jail.
Later WGEM reporting described the sheriff's office and jail as located in the basement of the 125-year-old courthouse and said commissioners voted to put a sales-tax measure on the April 2023 ballot for a new law enforcement center. The project was described as including jail space, sheriff's administrative space, and 911 emergency services. A 2025 WGEM video page reported a groundbreaking for a new Shelby County Jail after voters approved two separate half-cent sales taxes nearly two years earlier. The research did not confirm an opening date or current bed count for the new facility.
Shelby County Jail Visitation
Official Shelby County Jail visitation rules were not located. No jail visitation schedule, prohibited-items page, dress code, child-visitor rule, attorney-visit schedule, holiday notice, or video visitation vendor was published in the source material. This is a practical travel issue. Call before driving to Shelbyville, especially before bringing property, children, medication, phones, or documents.

Shelby County Jail Commissary Mail Phone
Tiger Commissary is the vendor evidence found for Shelby County Jail services. Its Missouri facility selector lists Shelby MO Detention Center in Shelbyville, and the Shelby service page provides an Order Commissary option. The page states that commissary can be ordered and shipped to an inmate. It does not provide a public custody roster and should not be used as the only proof that a person is held.
| Service | Provider / Detail | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Commissary ordering | Tiger Commissary | Online ordering for Shelby MO Detention Center was observed. |
| Money deposit | Not located in official Shelby source | Confirm with the sheriff before sending funds. |
| Mail format | Not published | Ask the jail for current mail rules. |
| Phone vendor | Not located | Missouri law requires reasonable access and caps domestic call charges. |
The Tiger Commissary Shelby MO Detention Center page is the documented online commissary channel.
Use it for commissary context only after confirming custody through the sheriff.
Shelby County Jail Booking Intake
A local arrest may be made by the sheriff, a municipal officer, or another authorized agency. If the person is taken to Shelby County Jail, booking normally creates the local custody record. Intake can involve identity checks, property handling, search, fingerprints or photograph if taken by agency procedure, medical or mental-health screening, charge or hold entry, and housing assignment.
RSMo 221.040 requires the sheriff and jailer to receive persons apprehended by officers for state offenses or committed by competent authority. RSMo 544.170 explains the 24-hour charging rule for warrantless arrests. A person can therefore be in jail before the filed court case appears online.
Shelby County Jail Records Photos
No public Shelby County Jail mugshot gallery was located. Booking photos, if taken and releasable, should be requested from the Sheriff's Office under Missouri public-record procedures. A request should include full name, DOB if known, booking or arrest date, arresting agency, case number if known, and the specific record requested. Ask for a fee estimate before asking for copies.
RSMo 610.100 makes Missouri arrest and incident reports open records subject to exceptions. RSMo 407.1150 addresses booking photographs and commercial paid removal practices. Neither statute creates a Shelby County photo roster, but both explain how public access and mugshot removal questions should be handled.
Shelby County Jail Transfers
Once a person is sentenced to Missouri prison, the record path moves away from the county jail. Use Missouri DOC Offender Search for active state prison, probation, and parole records. The research found no state prison physically located in Shelby County. DOC District 3 serves Shelby County for probation and parole context.
Federal and immigration custody use separate tools. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to present, and ICE ODLS is used for immigration detainee searches. A local release from Shelby County Jail may still be followed by transfer if another hold or detainer exists.
Note: Confirm custody and visitation with the sheriff before travel, money orders, commissary orders, or records requests.
